Introduction

The Orchids Trek is a genuine and authentic ecotourism trek runs next to Vientiane. This tour is lead by the villagers of Ban Hatkhai village and aims to improve their well-being, as well as to increase their incomes. By the same way, the Orchids Trek offers a tool for environmental and cultural awareness as well as orchids preservation and conservation by involving several stakeholders: - The villagers who are guiding the tour (local guides) and providing services such as activities, guiding, food.. You as guests of the tour by integrating you. You are not only a spectator but as well an actor. For each tour, a part of the money gets to the villagers and the village development fund. Moreover, a part of the money gets to the trails and forest maintenance. You will be guided by local guides and an orchid’s expert will join you.

One of the closest national park to Vientiane, Phou Khao Kway or “Buffalo Horn Mountain” is a real breathtaking area with several waterfalls and is well known for its flora with more than 50% of the wild orchids species of Laos and plenty of different plants. This is equally the home of many mammals such as wild elephants. The park covers 2000 square kilometers with some peak of up to 1600m and features a huge variety of sceneries between rugged mountains, gorges, waterfalls such Pha Xay and sandstone cliffs.

The tour “orchids trek” will lead you through a part of this park to learn more about wild orchids.   This trek is a project between villagers, Vientiane Orchidées and the Lao National University of Botanic. It is the result of a strong willingness to struggle illegal poaching, illegal trade activities in the protected area and provide some better incomes to the villagers. As a fair trek, the villagers have been involved into the project since the beginning to train them and make them aware of the richness they have around them in order to protect it: they provide food, they are guide, they take care of the maintenance, etc... A part of the money goes to a village development fund, a part to the villagers and a 5% gets to orchids preservation.

Itinerary

You will leave Vientiane at 7:30am and go directly to the park where you will arrive around one and half hour later.  The trek starts at Pha Xay where you will enjoy a beautiful view on the waterfalls. Then the trek gets into a rainforest and along several parts of the trek you may enjoy the beauty of the flowers and the nature. The trek slides into a varied jungle between evergreen forest, bamboo forests and of course along your way you may observe some orchids spots and may be, if you are lucky you’ll see some wildlife. Besides some great sceneries and many wild orchids, the protected area offers a trail through dry evergreen and mixed deciduous forests.

Lunch is a picnic along a river and you will really appreciate the calm of the area. Do not forget to observe all the butterflies that could fly around you.   Then, you will continue your walk and reach another amazing waterfall Tad Xay with 7 steps. A great place for swimming or take a rest before to end your trek through another important orchids spot and get back to Vientiane.   Remark: Please consider that wild orchids are rare plants, even in national park!! Most of them blooming one time a year and just a few days, some just appear in rainy season, but there is some blooming every month, the pick is January to June. Return to Vientiane around 5:30pm. Transfers to your hotel or to your next destination.
