Homestay Kubang Telaga, Bachok

The hypnotic sounds of the kertok, a traditional musical instrument, greets visitors upon arrival at Kubang Telaga Village, located in Bachok, Kelantan. These uniquely shaped musical instruments are often heard during special occasions to welcome guests and played at weddings.

The warm and friendly welcome by villagers showcases the delightful hospitality inherent in the Malay culture in Kelantan.

Musicians beat the kertok in tandem, producing a unique sound, inherent of the Malay culture and age-old traditions found in Kelantan. Traditional pastimes are still preserved here, especially gasing and iron-making, still made by meticulously by hand.

Watch Pak Razak, the gasing (top) maker; deftly shape a cut merbau wood into an intricately shaped gasing. His hands expertly spinning the hardwood, into a fine gasing, in his workroom. It takes several days for Pak Razak to make a good gasing, and the result is impressive.

Or glimpse the inner sanctum of Pak Yusof’s workshop, a wooden shed for iron-making. As he skillfully lights up a fire to heat the iron blade, and knocking it into shape. This ancient tradition produces highly sought after small sickles (parang), and even the epitome of Malay culture, the keris.

A village steeped in tradition, a visit here is a delightful eye-opener into the ancient Malay wisdom of Kelantanese folk .
