MAKING GOOD ON THE “ECO” IN “ECOTOURISM”

Today, more than 60 countries worldwide have turned to ecotourism as a viable alternative to mass tourism. As a concept, ecotourism is in crisis. This is largely because of the confusion over the meaning of the term “ecotourism” that has its relationship with conservation, sustainability, and biological diversity.

According to United Nation’s Convention on Biological Diversity , ecotourism is intended to advance the three basic goals of UN’s through:

(i) conservation of biological and cultural diversity;

(ii) promoting the sustainable use of biodiversity and

(iii) sharing the benefits of ecotourism developments equitably with local communities and indigenous people.

But in reality, what is called "ecotourism" by many has very little "eco" in it. Ecotourism has also become Malaysia’s major economic contributor in the past three decades. On the surface, it certainly appears Malaysia has fared squarely in putting the “eco” in the “ecotourism” industry. This paper will present some exemplary ecotourism activities promoted by the State Governments of Malaysia that have received world commendation for their roles in advancing the three agendas of ecotourism to their full potentials. The revenue generated has enabled State Governments to embark on innovative programs aimed at preserving and adding value to existing natural heritage particularly our rich and diverse tropical ecosystems including our rainforests, coral reefs and mangroves.

As ecotourism continues to provide greater economic opportunities, we must begin to worry about future “abuse” of the name “ecotourism”. Malaysia needs to put in place appropriate regulatory measures so that the name “ecotourism” is not used as a marketing tool when the product and services fail to satisfy the three criteria originally conceived by UNEP.
