Introduction Tioman Island, a tiny tropical island paradise off the south of Malaysia's east coast, is a popular duty-free destination with lovely beaches and clear waters for snorkeling or diving. The island is only 39km (23 1/2 miles) long and 12km (7 1/4 miles) wide, with sandy beaches that line several small bays, clear waters filled with sea life and coral reefs as well as jungle mountain-trekking trails with streams and waterfalls.
First Impressions White sandy beaches with clear, calm, and warm water teeming with all sorts of tropical marine life. The undeveloped island sits in a marine park, so expect crystal turquoise waters, a kaleidoscope of corals and coconut trees swaying gently along the powdery white beaches. Be one with the magnificent sunsets. So idyllic is the setting that Tioman was the location for the 1950s Hollywood film South Pacific.
Weather For most of the year the weather is beautiful – expect hot sun and cooling winds on the coast so visitors can sit on the beach, swim in the sea or play beach games.
Walking Around Tioman has retained much of its tropical island charm. Casual activity is spread throughout the kampungs (villages), which spring up in the various bays of the island.
In Tekek, you'll find the airport, main ferry jetty and mini markets well stocked with duty free goods. Other kampungs include Air Batang aka ABC, Salang on the west coast and Juara on the east coast.
Moving Around Except for a short concrete path connecting the airport at Tekek to the nearby Berjaya Resort, there are no roads on Tioman and you will have to resort to seabuses and speedboats to get around.
The cheapest being the sea bus (a converted fishing boat) starting at around RM10 to hiring a motorboat and driver with prices going up to RM100 or beyond, depending on how long and how far you need them for.
Golfing Or if you prefer more leisurely activities, there's a international 18 hole golf course.
Jungle Trekking There is also the option of wandering through lush rainforest. There are jungle trekking tours with guides to take you to places of interest – with waterfalls being high on the list. The more adventurous can try the 3 hour trek across the island between Tekek village on the west and Juara village on the east.

Marine Park A protected marine park, Tioman boasts numerous dive sites and a bewildering variety of fish and coral life. A scuba diver's paradise. Pure white beaches and warm emerald waters grace this stunning island. Some guests are prefectly content to do absolutely nothing at all. While others prefer to try their hand at popular Tioman island activities such as: beach combing, jungle trekking, rock climbing or snorkeling.
Fishing Fishing is permitted outside the marine park.
Diving & Snorkelling Not surprisingly the clear waters, marine park protection and the abundant sea life have made the island very popular with the diving and snorkelling community. The resorts dotted around the island have dive shops that offer everything from a quick snorkelling trip to full diving courses.
A snorkelling trip will take you on a boat to popular destinations like Tulai Island. The trip will take most of the day (lunch is usually provided) and you should get to swim at two or three spots with good coral and lots of underwater life.
Glass Bottom Boats Those who would like to get a look at some coral and fish without getting wet might want to take a trip in one of the glass-bottomed boats. These motor out to some of the shallower parts of the reef.
Sailing & Canoeing If you enjoy a bit of peace and quiet alone on the water there are sailing boats and canoes for hire.
Watersports Centre The watersports centre at the Berjaya resort also has jet skis for hire, if you fancy something noisier – and faster. |
